OK. It’s a given that your bed harbours loads of dust mites. Did you know that anywhere between 100,000 and 10,000,000 of them are feasting on your dead skin cells? TEN MILLION!! Yuk!!
It’s no wonder that people who suffer from asthma wake up feeling congested and wheezy. You can use chemicals to kill them but these chemicals are toxic and have the potential to exacerbate the problem. You can spend a fortune on mattresses that boast claims of being dust mite free. Are you up for a low cost, natural way to get those numbers down and get a decent nights sleep? You bet you are!
Right then! Battle of the dust mites starts here. First thing you need to do is strip the bed of linen and wash it. A hot wash is needed – dust mites cling to fabric and are not killed by cool water. Second, you need to vacuum the mattress AND the bed frame, moving the mattress to get to the edges and corners and preferably vacuuming under the bed too.
Next we mix a potion that is a natural Napalm to dust mites and will make your mattress inhospitable to them.
Get yourself a large container with a lid or Kilner jar and do the following:
1, Add 3 mugs of bicarbonate of soda to the jar (this will absorb any moisture where they live – dust mites hate dry conditions).
2, Add 15 drops of Eucalyptus essential oil (it kills them) and add 20 drops of Lavender oil (deters them and will help you sleep).
3, Stick the lid on the container and give it a good shake up.
4, Grab your sieve and head for the bedroom.
5, Gently sprinkle the powder over the mattress covering it in a thin layer of white powder.
6, Put the kettle on, time for a mash up.
7, Leave for an hour or longer then vacuum off the powder.
Et Voila, dust mites dead or dying – certainly more irritated than you and less irritation. You can’t kill them all but surly it’s worth a try. You will also sleep like a baby. Result. Repeat every so often and enjoy the fresh clean sheets that will smell faintly of Lavender, letting you get a good nights rest. Bliss!
